Chiropractic Care for ILWU Members

Chiropractic care for Long Beach longshoremen and port workers.

Lashing, driving, crane work and long shifts on the terminal are hard on the spine, shoulders and knees. We see ILWU members and their families through the ILWU-PMA Welfare Plan, minutes from the Port of Long Beach in downtown Long Beach.

What port work does to your body

Longshore work combines heavy lifting, awkward reaching, hours of vibration in yard tractors and top handlers, and long climbs into cranes. Over years, that adds up. The complaints we hear from ILWU members are remarkably consistent.

  • Low back pain and stiffness from lashing, lifting and twisting
  • Neck and upper back tension from crane and equipment operation
  • Shoulder pain from overhead work and handling lashing bars
  • Hip and knee pain from climbing ladders and long hours on concrete
  • Sciatica and leg symptoms after years of whole-body vibration
  • Stiffness and fatigue that build up across back-to-back shifts
Our approach

Care that keeps you working

Dr. Robert Del Torto evaluates how you move on and off the job, then builds a plan around your shifts and your body. Care may include chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue work, functional rehab exercises that match the physical demands of port work, and practical changes to how you sit, lift and recover between shifts.

Coverage

Using your ILWU-PMA Welfare Plan benefits

We see ILWU members and covered family members through the ILWU-PMA Welfare Plan. Benefits and coverage details vary, so call the office before your first visit and we will help you confirm what your plan covers.

Please note: we do not treat on-the-job injury claims under federal longshore workers’ compensation. If you were hurt at work, report it through your employer and the longshore claims process. We are happy to see you for care covered by your Welfare Plan.
